Helping our children and adults live the best possible life their disability allows.

Stimulation Centre

The stimulation centre operates from 8-12 daily following the provincial school calendar.

Junior classes are divided according to ability and the Senior’s according to age. A programme of basic self-care skills e.g. eating, toilet training and discipline is crucial to the development of each child and adult. Dedication, training and encouragement from the staff at Aurora Special Care Centre enable them to fulfil these needs.

The programme includes entertainment, singing, wheelchair dancing, outings, water play, physiotherapy, light therapy and different educational activities. They enjoy a busy morning at the centre.

Occupational therapy

Various therapies helping to treat personal and individualised challenges, to live the best life possible.

In therapy we address sensory, motor, perceptual and cognitive elements to enable the individual to reach their highest potential. Input is given both individually and in class formats. Support and training are provided to staff and parents.

Our alternative communication programme using pictures and eye gaze assists to enable learning, allowing the child to make their needs known and for making choices.

Physiotherapy is aimed at using functional activities and play to help each child to reach his/her full potential developmental milestones.

Therapy helps to maintain mobility and to prevent contractures and deformities. We provide the necessary support and training to staff and parents. Assistive devices, such as standing frames, walkers and orthotics, play a significant and supportive role in the management of most of the children. Correct seating plays a dynamic role in maintaining good postural control and to prevent deterioration of deformities such as scoliosis, kyphosis, hip dislocation, etc.

We have a very good support team of specialists, i.e. paediatric orthopaedic surgeon, orthotist, seating specialists, etc. who assist us in the management of the children and adults. We work as part of a multi-disciplinary team who establishes positive relationships and communication in the best interest of the child. We also provide support, resources and training to the community.

Sensory Stimulation

These include any activity that will stimulate any one or all a child’s five senses, to help them develop and refine the use of those senses.

We have a SENSORY ROOM, SENSORY GARDEN and a SNOEZELEN ROOM which incorporates a specialised selection of sensory equipment and materials that help individuals to adapt their responses to sensory stimulation.

A SENSORY ROOM is a special room designed and equipped to stimulate the senses of hearing, sight, touch and smell. It is a place where the children can explore and develop their sensory skills, but also where they can relax and relieve stress and anxiety.

The SNOEZELEN ROOM is a dimly lit room with relaxing music, lights and various types of stimuli to create an atmosphere of warmth, confidence and pleasure, stimulating primary senses: sight, sound, smell and touch. It aims to improve quality of life by using the senses as a means of communication with individuals who are unable to express their needs or feelings.

Water Play Activities

The weightless effect and warmth of the water creates the opportunity for individuals to experience and accomplish movement they would not normally be able to achieve, improves balance and provides opportunities for social interaction.

This activity is run by the teaching staff, as well as volunteers.

We are extremely dependant on volunteers for assistance with individual children/adults in the pool.

Residence & Group Home

We offer residential care for 54 physically and mentally disabled residents, in our Group Home (Paddy House) and our Residence. The age range of our residents is from 7 years to 92 years old.

We provide 3 meals per day which are all approved by a dietician.

The care staff provide stimulation for the residents in the afternoons and on weekends, we also have the services of trained medical staff on duty 24/7.
